The Fall 2018 Show is a special collaboration with Mr. Wayman’s Drama Class, the Kalihi Players and T-Shirt Theatre to present a “Rap” version of Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”

“Mr. Wayman asked if we would mind some TST cast members who had been in the Spring Drama Class, to be able to help with “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” Fall production. Why should just a handful of kids have all the fun? This seemed like a good opportunity to collaborate on a show with Mr. Wayman, who has been preparing students for TST for many years.”

–       George Kon, Executive Director

“I hadn’t read the play since I was a freshman. That was also the year I started rapping. A lot of learning and appreciation for Shakespearean English has happened since then, and as I read this time around the words jumped at me differently. Now I was able to appreciate the rhyme schemes and poetry. I understood the wit and timing in a new way. When I came to a juicy section with lots of rhymes I would beatbox to it to see how long that Beats Per Minute could work. My son and I experiment with different beat making apps and he downloaded one that worked perfectly. I built the entire soundscape with that. In putting this show together I’m realizing how hip-hop, Shakespeare is!! He invented words, rhymed, and told stories in a relevant way. For me, Rap and Shakespeare are almost meant to be!”
